Research

I checked out Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I admit I haven’t read it yet and it occurred to me that if I’m writing anything about vampires, maybe I should read the book that everyone knows about. I hope I like it, but I’m fickle that way. You never know.

Also, I’m writing a second review for the Romance Divas website. This one is a fantasy set in the medieval era. I hope I like that one, too. This weekend will involve a lot of my favorite past time — reading.

How nice for me!

Just do it

So, I haven’t written much in my book lately and last night I thought I ought to rectify that unfortunate situation. I sat down in my big comfy chair, had a yellow legal pad on my lap, and my favorite kind of black gel pen was in my hand. Then I got writer’s block.

Now, I have a strict policy with writer’s block that I developed in college while finishing my evil senior thesis (M can empathize with me on this one). The policy is that if I can’t think of anything to write at that moment I just start writing anything. Like verbal diarrhea (nasty, but true) I just do it, period.

I randomly wrote yesterday for about 20 minutes before I realized that I had a pretty decent First Kiss scene that I have been avoiding for a few weeks because I didn’t know how to write it. So, my writer’s block unblocked my other writer’s block. It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

Wicked

Mad Madam M sent me the soundtrack of “Wicked” a few weeks ago and I’ve become obsessed with listening to it. Seriously, everyday to and from work, I listen.

So, I was thinking that since this is a Broadway musical and my story is set in New York, maybe I should work it in. I mean, what if the hero took the heroine to “Wicked.” She’s a witch; you just have to love a man with a sense of irony. But, will it date the story? I don’t want too many pop culture references; however, it is sorta chick-lit-ish, so one might expect that kind of thing. I’ll have to ponder this more fully.

Unfortunate Epiphany

Recently, I had another book idea. But I know I’ll never write it. How sad is that? It’s a pretty good idea, too. I like paranormal romance and that’s what my muse likes to make me write, but the other day the evil wench had a hiccup and now I have a grand idea for a contemporary romance.

Sometimes my muse is an utterly loathsome pain in the a$$.

Now what do I do with the idea? **sigh**

Not so productive weekend

I didn’t get anything done this weekend in terms of writing. I felt sickish most of the time and spent my days in bed sleeping it off. I did manage to drag myself to a play because I knew the guy who directed it and I cross-my-heart-hope-to-die promised. It was pretty good, actually. A romantic comedy musical set in Minnesota (played by Tennesseans, which right there is already funny) called “Don’t Hug Me.” I had a good time, then I went home to sleep some more. I feel much better today though. Hopefully I can get something accomplished this week with writing because right now I feel like I’m on an airplane that just keeps circling the runway.

And I’m starting to get airsick; so I need to land this baby, right?

Fun quiz

I admit I don’t have much to say today, so I’ll leave you with a fun quiz I took when deciding which city to base my novel in. ( Yeah, that sentence can use some grammar work, but I’m running late right now)

Take the quiz: “Which American City Are You?”

New York
You’re competative, you like to take it straight to the fight. You gotta have it all or die trying.

Goals

This weekend I’m hoping to get another chapter written in my WIP. I also have some research to do on an article I want to write in a professional library journal about the class I’m teaching next semester. Wish me luck!

Tying up loose ends

I finished my first review for Romance Divas and I’m polishing up review#2 for the library journal. Should be sent off by this afternoon, which means I totally met my writing goals for this week. Woo-hoo. I rock.

Also, last night I had a little free time before The OC came on and I squeezed in some new writing on Every Witch Way (I just love my new title. Shout out to Liddy Midnight for coming up with it!) Anyway, I wrote this dialogue scene between my hero and heroine and poof! I had this total epiphany about how to tie up a loose end in my book.

I didn’t know how I could possibly make it work (I totally wrote myself into a corner) and then the hero just said something and it worked itself out. No fuss, no drama. That’s what I love about my hero. I want to steal him from my heroine, but unfortunately, I also made him the faithful type. Darn!

How to make a successful "debut"

So, the friend of a friend of Mad Madam M told her a story I have to relate. This friend twice-removed recently changed doctors and got to take a look at her medical records. Now she’s never had any experience with you know; so, when she checked out her records, the doctor hadn’t written she’s still got her V-chip, he said she hadn’t “debuted.”

I thought, “This is brilliant!”

So, your first time would make you, what, a debutante? And if you’re still a virgin, you must be a wallflower, right? A lady needs to be very selective who she dances with at her “debut.” And if you go by old Regency England rules, if a lady dances with the same gentleman more than three times at her “debut” she’s a shameless hussy, but if she has multiple partners she’s a smashingly successful debutante. Hehe.

The list of jokes I could, and did, make over this one is just too long to type out, but I’m sure you can come up with a few of your own. M and I cracked up for a very long time last night.

Congratulations! It’s a …TITLE

I posted over on Romance Divas to see if I could find a title for “Silver Bullet” that I really liked. I had many good suggestions and a few funny ones. Thanks to all the Divas who voted!

Drum roll, please…

The new title is…

Every Witch Way
